Natural Stone - designed by Mother Nature. Working with natural stone is an art and takes many years of experience, in a variety of stone types and styles of installation, to achieve the knowledge to make a project look elegant. Taken from a quarry Masons cut, shape and install to design specifications. Natural stone jobs require adequate time and material. Masons select the right stone from the pallet where they work with chisels and cutting tools, as needed, to create utility and beauty that comes from natural stone elements.
Full Bed Depth Stone - is the thickness of the stone as it is quarried and breaks off in natural layers (typically 4" width from front to back) and is then stacked one upon another to create the veneer exterior of the building. Full bed depth stone, applied like brick, sits on a ledge of angle iron or a poured foundation ledge.
Thin cut stone - cut from full bed depth stone to a thickness typically 1-1.5" width front to back. Thin cut stone is affixed to a building by "buttering" the back of the stone with cement and sticking it to a scratch coat of cement and lathe already applied to the wall. The style may call for a stack stone look or a mortar joint depending on preference.
Manufactured Stone - also known as faux or cultured stone comes in a variety of colors and styles to imitate natural stone. Manufactured stone, always affixed to a scratch coat substrate by "buttering" the back of the stone with cement mortar, and installed with or without mortar joints.
Prior to making your selection, be sure to investigate a manufactured stone producer's warranty due to the options that exist.
